Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a busy, crime-filled urban area. With the help of a local environmental organization, we have recently started a beautification project outside of our school. Today, we pulled up all of the weeds and debris in our front yard, while wearing masks and practicing social distancing. In a few weeks, we will plant flowers, bushes and a 4 foot by 8 foot vegetable garden on either side of our front entrance to the High School!

Especially at this challenging time of Covid 19, I think it is important that we harvest beauty and crops to be able to enjoy.

This garden will also provide those students, who are interested, with a positive hobby in which to participate when we return to school!

My Project

Since we can not maintain the garden together at this time, we will send seeds home for each family to plant in a pot so that they can see their vegetables grow at home, while we are learning virtually. We will teach students, via Google Meet, how to make nutritious snacks and meals.

We will send updated pictures for the students to see the progress in our School Garden so that when we return, they are familiar with the garden and can physically help maintain it in the future!

We plan to set up a Mindfulness area with a bench, plants and tree, so that our students have a place to appreciate and reflect upon nature.
