Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Aloha! I am a 4th grade teacher at one of the largest elementary schools in the Honolulu district of Hawaii. As a Title 1 school, 54% of students are considered low-income and eligible for free or reduced lunch. My school has a diverse student body with a large concentration of students of Asian or Pacific Islander backgrounds. Additionally, about 17% of students are English Language Learners. Despite the challenges and difficulties they face, my students come to school eager and ready to learn and grow!
My Project
A sweltering hot classroom is not a conducive environment for learning and hinders students' academic performance, focus, and interest. I teach in a non-air conditioned classroom in a state that gets warm weather year-round. These conditions often make my classroom too hot to learn and can cause students to get headaches or feel tired and sleepy. According to studies, high temperatures cause the brain to shift focus which in turn makes critical thinking in the classroom a difficult task. These fans would help my students concentrate on learning instead of the stifling heat. By donating to this project, you will help remove an immense learning barrier for my students.
