This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend an urban public school in Oklahoma that serves grades 7-12. 85% of our students receive a free or reduced-price lunch. My students are lower middle class and most are in single parent homes or live with grandparents.
My students do not come with supplies and rely on the school for basic classroom needs.
We want our students to have equal access despite our inability to provide it. My students want to learn and we are responsible to provide the tools necessary to do so.
My Project
We know that reading boosts vocabulary, sharpens reason, and expands intellectual horizons. We want our students to understand the universal themes that we can study in novels. Over several years of using novels in the classroom, books get damaged and lost and we are getting to the point where many are no longer a class set. We need to replenish the class sets so that they can be used again. We do not expect students to provide their own novels and since we want to continue to read novels in grades 7-12 we need to make sure our class sets are complete.
