Our goal for our students is to help them today to be readers so tomorrow they can be leaders! We have the hard part covered, they love our new Media Center, but we need some great books! We have to feed these hungry bear brains to help them grow into lifelong readers!
Our students are 9th-12th graders; yes they are teenagers and we must keep them reading!
Our school has approximately 600 students, which means we need lots of books and a great collection to spark their interests. They love to hang out in our new Media Center; due to renovations they went without one for almost 2 years. I have listened to them say things like, "Really is the Media Center open?", "Really can we check out books?". All of these things can make a new Media Specialist pretty sad because I want them to know our doors are always open to them and of course they can check out books. I want them to know this is a space for them, for leisure reading, for research or simply hanging out to do homework with friends. I actually had a female student in 12th grade tell me that she had never checked out books here until this year, and it was her final year of high school, that was truly sad. Our main goal is to provide quality literature that makes them want to READ.
My Project
This grant will help us to provide a high quality collection of fiction materials for our students. The students will be able to have high interest reading materials for their personal reading needs. They will also have a fun, engaging space to call their own in a positive learning environment. Currently our library collection is very dated, the materials that interest them are very limited. The state of North Carolina recommends our school libraries have 10 books per student in the collection and we have 7 books per student. In addition, our fiction collection average copyright age is 1980; extremely old and not filling the need for our students. The Bear's Den Lunch Cafe is a popular spot already, but on a daily basis I have students asking for titles that we simply don't have. We must meet their needs or they are going to become uninterested in our space. Through this activity our students will learn libraries are cool places to learn, grow and have fun as a lifelong reader!
Teenagers must read as much as younger students, their brains are still growing!
Reading builds a stronger vocabulary and grows writers that must navigate their way through higher education! This grant will provide our students with a new collection of fiction materials that will spark their interests! We must have a collection that is made especially for them and their needs! As readers the recipe includes a little of the classics, a lot of the modern and a dash of eclectic!
