My Students

Each day, my sharp scholars enter our classroom excited for the opportunity to learn. They know that through perseverance and hard work, they will be ready for college and career.

Although many of our students face challenges inside and outside of the school environment, this does not hinder their eagerness to learn.

They inspire me each day with their enthusiasm, and we create a classroom that serves as a safe space where they can take intellectual risks and develop deeper learning.

My Project

When students can move about the room and choose from a variety of seating options, engagement and opportunities for collaboration increase. Currently, I provide area rugs and pillows if students would like to sit on the floor during independent work time, but I would like to expand the available options and empower students with more choice.

It wasn't until I myself suffered a traumatic brain injury that I realized how the classroom environment and arrangement of furniture can affect learning for students.

I know from my own experiences that perception and sensory issues can take away from my ability to concentrate, and therefore I am committed to creating a calm, inviting environment for my students.

The requested bean bag chairs will be used in my classroom library to provide students with a comfy place to curl up with a book. I believe this project will benefit my students by facilitating greater student engagement and focus, increased time on task, and higher levels of learning as they are empowered to choose where they would like to sit and learn.
