My students are urban students who face many challenges. They work very hard to achieve high educational standards but face setbacks by things that many people may take for granted. I teach twelve students that have been together for many years. They are a self-contained class so they are a family. They both challenge and support each other every day. They love to find out about what's going on in the world and in science.
My students are unique and would like more opportunities to read about what is going on in their world.
My Project
These materials will pique my students' reading by exposing them to current events, history, and fun articles. My students have all different interests and reading abilities, and this project will reach out to all of their needs.
My students find it hard to read material on their level.
The magazines Scholastic News and Storyworks will have fun and interesting leveled articles that they can read without making them feel self confident that they are reading at a lower level. This will help give my students confidence to read without having to read books that will embarrass them or hurt their self-esteem. We also do not have comfortable furniture in the room. Bean bag chairs are a way for my students to either relax or get their wiggles out in a safe way.
