it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Many students struggle with math due to the abstract concepts. In order for students to understand concepts and develop number sense, they need to engage with concrete materials.
One of the best ways to engage learners is through an approach that begins with concrete materials such as beads, sticks, and cubes to represent quantities.
This allows students to see quantities, increase fluency with numbers, and access higher level concepts. Once students develop an understanding with the concrete materials, they will move to more traditional math instruction.
Many skills in the upper grades are based on the idea that students have a firm grasp of the base ten system, and using the materials in this project will help students further develop these skills. For example, students will use the craft sticks to build bundles of ten and hundreds. They can use the sticks to solve addition and subtraction problems that involve regrouping. They will be able to physically see how ten ones become a bundle of ten. These method of instruction is beneficial to all students, and it is necessary for many struggling students.
