Be the Change We Need

Help me give my students a new classroom rug for a calming space to learn. This is my first year teaching so supplying the classroom with the tools (markers, laminating, crayons, etc.) my students deserve has been tough.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

As educators, we are tasked not only with imparting knowledge but also with cultivating an environment conducive to learning. One key aspect of this environment is the physical space in which students engage with educational material. It is with this consideration in mind that I propose the inclusion of a rug in our classroom setting, specifically designated for reading time.

Firstly, let us acknowledge the psychological impact of the learning environment on students.

A classroom should not merely be a utilitarian space; it should be inviting and comfortable, encouraging students to engage actively with the material presented. A rug offers a cozy, communal space where students can gather comfortably, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared learning experiences. By providing a designated area for reading, we signal to our students the importance and value we place on literacy and independent reading.

Furthermore, a rug promotes a relaxed atmosphere conducive to concentration and focus. Unlike traditional desks and chairs, which can sometimes feel rigid and confining, a rug allows for freedom of movement and encourages students to find a comfortable position while reading. This freedom promotes a sense of autonomy and ownership over one's learning experience, empowering students to take charge of their education.

In conclusion, the inclusion of a rug in our classroom for reading time is not merely a decorative choice but a deliberate pedagogical decision aimed at enhancing the learning experience of our students. By creating a comfortable, inviting, and communal space, we promote a love for reading and lifelong learning. I urge our administration to consider this proposal seriously, as investing in our classroom environment is an investment in the future success of our students. Together, let us create a space where every student feels inspired to embark on literary adventures and discover the joy of reading.
