My Students

My students mean everything to me and they often come to school with heavy burdens on their shoulders. As a school counselor, I see the despair and conflict that plague the minds of my students. Students visit my office frequently when their burdens become overwhelming and needing encouragement to make it through their school day. I want my students to feel a sense of empowerment as we discuss their concerns in a safe nurturing environment.

School counselors are considered the heart of the school and advocates for all students regardless of their socioeconomic status.

Our students come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and 65% receive free or reduced price lunch. Early intervention and reading stories that build strong listening skills and teach tolerance is crucial in the molding of young minds of today. My students are in need of updated character education books that are engaging, encouraging and easy to comprehend. The potential I see in my students is remarkable. The teachers at my school work extremely hard and always encourage me as a school counselor to provide thought provoking stories that teach students empathy, conflict resolution, growth mindset and social skills.

My Project

The books selected were chosen specifically to address the needs for character building through diversity. As a school counselor, I want my students to connect to stories with relatable characters. I take great pride in having books in my school counseling library which promote tolerance, unity, and acceptance. However; all students, no matter their background, would benefit from hearing these wonderful stories about others who do not necessarily look like them.

My students live in a diverse community and it is important that they are aware of all the infinite opportunities afforded to them.

I have seen how they light up with pride when they are able to connect with characters in stories from similar backgrounds.
