Be Blown Away by a Child's Art Ability

Help me give my students a boost in self-esteem by installing display rails and a gallery picture system at our school to show everyone what they can do.

My Students

Do you remember middle school? It’s all about the transition and parting with childhood. It's about trying out new groups, handling emotions, contending with adult authority, and gaining insights and understandings to use in high school. Add to this the complexity of a former mill village trying to redefine itself and you come up with my students. For many, school is home and it provides needed stability. My students have tangled lives and there is little time to explore, express, and wander through problem solving in everyday life. This is where I come in.

Dwelling in possibilities, working out techniques, investigating materials, and mulling over artworks are just a few areas I get to lead students through.

Together, we create, slip up, laugh and sometimes cry. While we cut, paint, weave, and rip, we breathe, conceive, compose, and reflect. Some days we are astounded by what we can do and other days making is just frustrating. Students learn that art can be cool and that they are a capable of awesome. While students wrestle through growing up, I hope to provide a place to sometimes just be.

My Project

Have you ever been blown away by a child’s ability? Why wouldn’t you share that with everyone? When you walk into an elementary school, a visually rich landscape awaits. Student art is everywhere, and you can hear folks responding to what they see. In the middle school setting, however, showcasing student work fades as the demands of studying and applying take center stage. It can seem as if in parting with childhood, bigger kids have less time to explore originality and expression.

I want to celebrate my middle school students by displaying their artwork.

There is a lot of need in our rural district that sometimes gets the better of our school community. I want to acknowledge that students can and share that what they do is amazing. We must see the successes in focus, critical thinking, and communication. While displayed art enhances the environment and challenges aesthetics, it also affects the artist and viewer. Having an audience empowers students, boosting confidence and inspiring new ideas. I want students to be proud of and appreciate their varying talents. These tangled lives need to see hope.
