Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is a sweet group of 15 girls and 11 boys who are immersed in a unique kindergarten adventure. They will begin their school year in a virtual mode, but they are looking forward to coming back to our class.
My students are creative, thoughtful, and full of questions; they like reading, playing and trying new challenges.
They are my inspiration!
They come from different backgrounds but have something in common: they will have a blast learning Spanish!!
They spend their school day fully immersed in Spanish. They are on the path to bilingualism and cultural awareness. Thus, daily read alouds will be one of the best vehicles to improve their Spanish skills.
My Project
After analyzing the books I have for my class, I have realized that most of them, are predominantly white, cisgender, Western lifestyle, and this doesn't match the population in our school, the community we live or the actual world. Literature must be inclusive so every child in my class has a sense of belonging and inclusion.
We need stories with a more diverse set of characters, real heroes to look up to, BIPOC children, brave people from other cultures, characters who have overcome difficulties, boys and girls like them who come from different cultures, backgrounds, families, genders, etc.
By being exposed to all these stories, my students will grow up respecting differences, accepting other points of view and knowing that we are all different, but we all have the same rights and we have to take care of each other. They will also develop empathy and sympathy for other kids. This is going to be the kick off if we want them to be antiracist adults in the future.
Reading all these books will also help us increase our vocabulary in Spanish and improve their listening and speaking skills in this language.
