Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach physical science at an inner-city high school in Oklahoma City. Because of a lack of funds, many of our students have never experienced science. Science is a humbling and eye opening subject. It helps us develop, explain, and explore the world around us. Our students are naturally curious about the world they live in and demos/labs would help them explore it.

A good education can be a life changing experience.

Many of the students at our school are at risk kids, but are eager to learn everyday to better themselves through education.

As science teachers, we want to expose our students to science, but have no budget for new science equipment and chemicals. Our students deserve to experience hands on science and not just read about it in their books.

My Project

We will be using these chemicals to demonstrate different chemical reactions. These supplies will be used by the entire Physical Science department reaching around 500 kids. This will stimulate student interest in the subject and stir their imagination.

Science demonstrations help to inspire us and drive our interests.

The Potassium Chlorate will be used to rapidly, and very energetically, break down a gummy bear. This reaction mimics the breakdown of sugar in our stomach but at a much faster rate. The Hydrogen Peroxide will be used to create "Elephant Toothpaste". This will allow students to see the effect of a catalyst on a reaction. The Sodium Hydroxide and Zinc will be used to create a brass coated penny. This will allow students to see the physical appearance of the penny change from copper, to "silver", and then to "gold".
