My Students

Do you remember what it was like to learn the letters of the alphabet, words, and especially how to read? My students are trying to do just this however, lack of supplies could be seriously harming their success.

My students are in Kindergarten and attend an all girls charter school.

They are eager to learn and even more eager to please. Due to lack of supplies their success is in jeopardy! By receiving these magnetic letters, the girls will be able to use them in their literacy learning centers.

My Project

Magnetic letters have a variety of uses. My goal is to incorporate them into my literacy centers to help the students identify grade level sight words and beyond. The students will use these letters in activity called "See It, Say It, Write It!" The students will have 3-4 spelling words written on index cards. The students need to say the word, identify the correct magnetic letters that spell the word and place them on a cookie sheet. Then the students will write the word down in a chart that has been created for each child. The students are required to do this with each words, 4 times each. This activity will increase sight word identification which is imperative for students to learn in order to have success with learning how to read.

This project is very important because it will improve the students' sight word identification skills and the girls will be able to apply this to their success with reading.

Sight word activities such as this one that involves magnetic letters will also help to improve fluency.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
