My Students

"Babies are born with the instinct to speak, the way spiders are born with the instinct to spin webs. You don't need to train babies to speak; they just do. But reading is different." My students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations, but they have not read with Dr. Seuss.

Hello, I am a Primary Server Learning Disabled teacher.

My students range from grades 1st-2nd. They attend a public school in Nevada. I am requesting three sets of Dr. Seuss Beginning to Read books, and a set of Alphabet Reading books. Just a little bit about my students; all of my students have a Specific Learning Disability, which means a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, which may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell or do mathematical calculations. SLD includes conditions such as perceptual disabilities, brain injury, dyslexia, minimal brain dysfunction and developmental aphasia. My students love reading, and story time. They have great imaginations, and can recall their favorite stories. My students are a great bunch of kids, who love and embrace the powering of learning.

My Project

My desire as an educator is to have all of my Learning Disabled students reading by the end of the year. That is why I want to develop a reading incentive program called 'Battle of the Books'. My students will read books on their reading level or a little higher than their current reading level to help them foster their language and reading skills. During 'Battle of the Books', the students will come together to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge (reading comprehension) of the books they have read. Once the student has passed an oral reading comprehension test/quiz, the student will advance to another book within their reading series.

This program is GREATLY important to my students because it will nourish the hearts and minds of my students with excellent literature.

I believe every student should be encouraged and given the opportunity to develop their potential through the discovery of reading. My goal is to support students in their love and discovery for reading by introducing them to quality literature.
