My students need basketball shoes for this upcoming season. Over the years many of the school staff along with myself has had to purchase shoes for various team members who couldn't afford to buy suitable shoes.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our Castlemont boys are very special for many reasons. Over the past 12 years that I've been teaching and coaching them, I've seen the struggles and challenges that many of our East Oakland students face every day. Before they even get to our school campus, they are at a very big disadvantage compared to the students from other resource-rich environments. Unfortunately, a great deal of our students come from disadvantaged homes with a single parent. Once they get to a school that is short on resources, the game is almost already lost.

Our students don't get the chance to experience or even see many crucial opportunities that students from more stable and resource-rich environments and backgrounds get to experience.

These young men at Castlemont have shown true perseverance and grit, and have shown an ability to overcome many obstacles that would have halted many other students with far greater advantages.

My Project

Throughout the years, various school staff and community members have had to purchase basketball shoes and other equipment for members of the Castlemont Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball teams.

Because we are from a school where the community members don't have as many resources, students often don't get the necessities they need to flourish in many different aspects of life.

We as staff and community members have often had to purchase equipment and resources for many of the students on our campus, just so our kids can have a decent opportunity to compete.

This opportunity for our Varsity Basketball Team to acquire team shoes without the burden of trying to figure out how to ask, or hustle up money to get them, will go a long way.
