This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend an urban public school in Oklahoma that serves grades 7-12. 85% of our students receive a free or reduced price lunch. My students are lower middle class and most are in single parent homes or live with grandparents.
My students do not come with supplies and rely on the school for basic classroom needs.
We want our students to have equal access despite our inability to provide it. My students want to learn and we are responsible to provide the tools necessary to do so.
My Project
It is flu season and I am going through the Kleenex and cleaning supplies! Kids can't learn if they aren't in school; so I want to get the things necessary to keep the classroom environment clean in hopes of preventing illness.
If we are in class we are working.
I want my students to have pencils, pens, and markers to work on the many assignments we do together. In my English class much of our work is visual and I love to share their work on the walls. The double sided tape will allow me to display student work and the toner will allow me to print out their work.
I have been teaching for over twenty years and do not get a stipend for general supplies for classroom operations. I spend what it takes to make sure my students have what they need. I don't want them to feel like they are less important because we don't have things.
