The students of my classroom are an amazing group with so much infectious motivation. I work in a school district where the crime rate as well as the poverty rate are high and resources are low. Poverty and crime is a regular occurrence for my students. Many of them find school to be a haven where they can feel safe and get social-emotional as well as educational support. Most of the materials in my classroom (from pencils to lab materials) are bought by me to bring science to life.
My goal is to create a safe environment where my students can engage in hands-on activities, take risks, and grow to be resilient learners with a strong foundation of science.
They have a genuine curiosity for the world and want to do well in school in an attempt to better themselves and their families in the future. Having the supplies and materials necessary would be of great assistance on their journey to achieving academic success.
My Project
For the last 2 years, I've been using an old and stained showerboard as a whiteboard. It's difficult for my students to read what I write and is a giant eyesore in the front of my room. Getting a clean whiteboard at the front of my room will help make my room look more neat and organized. In addition, the new markers will help my students be able to have their own to minimize germs and disinfecting time when they need to write on the board.
This year about half of my students will be working from home on computers while the other half will be using computers at school to reduce cross-contamination.
Each of my students needs a reliable pair of headphones so we can hear each other clearly and minimize distractions.
My science curriculum is inquiry-based and each we build a driving question board with each unit, to ask questions, guide our learning, and make connections. The colored notecards will help distinguish questions and ideas from different classes and create a visually appealing map for our learning adventure.
