This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are faced with many obstacles and often need extra time to develop skills. We are a transition classroom that serves Special Education students 18+ Daily Living Skills. The quality of life and freedoms my students have is solely dependent on how many life skills they can master before school ends. The students in my class require hands-on action skills in order to learn due to multiple speech impairments and nonverbal communication. They learn best by using visuals and being taught in a real-world experience. My students come from low socio-economically disadvantaged families. Despite their disabilities and family status, they long to be accepted and loved. They have a desire to please and want the ability to make decisions as most of us do. They desire to be independent by learning how to take care of their personal hygiene, learning functional communication, simple cooking, dressing, social skills, weather knowledge, as well as community rules.

My Project

These basic supplies requested will be used for dual purposes. The paper and envelopes will be used so that families are kept informed about student achievements, new goals, and progress monitoring. These will also be used so that families can be given information about all extra community resources available to our special population of students. In addition to paperwork and community resources, the paper and writing utensils can be used as art supplies, but double as a coping and calming strategy for better classroom success. Art can be a form of expression for non-verbal students and gives them an outlet to express themselves.
