Basic Projector + Surface Pro = D.I.Y Interactive SMART-board

My students need a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 because it can be connected to a basic/cheap projector and used like an expensive interactive SMART-board. Better yet, it can be moved between classes and shared by teachers!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an amazing place where students of multiple backgrounds and cultures come together to learn and grow. Unfortunately, many of our students face socioeconomic problems and quite a few are young parents. Our students are often faced with violence and hunger in their communities and homes. Sadly, many of our students do not even see college as a possibility and struggle to graduate. Several of our students are new to America and are English language learners. They must quickly adapt to a new culture, language, and lifestyle.

As a special education teacher in an ICT or integrated classroom, my students are a mixture of general education and special education students with a diverse range of needs and skills.

Several are 2-3 grade levels below their age groups in reading and writing. Many have Learning Disabilities and some speak limited English, but they are hardworking with so much potential. With such a diverse group of students the use of technology and creativity in our classroom would be of great benefit. These are really great kids who deserve to have the supplies and materials needed to succeed.

My Project

While my school does what they can to give our students access to technology and interactive tools, unfortunately there is not enough to go around. While a few of our classrooms have interactive SMART-boards, a majority of classes only have OLD projectors. However, with the Surface Pro you can connect it to the projector and make a makeshift SMART-board that is a fraction of the price and can be moved from room to room and shared by teachers. This will allow my students to interact and share their ideas and thoughts. We can highlight important texts, save student thoughts and writings, and foster technological literacy among my students.

Having this kind of technology in my class will increase flexibility, engagement, interaction, and will greatly enhance my teaching and my students learning.

Because so many of my students are English language learners and/or special education students, it is so important that I am able to incorporate what ever differentiation and adaptations that will help them learn and have the greatest chance of success. This kind of tool could truly create a more creative and dynamic classroom for my students.
