Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of us remember the lessons we learned and the wonderful teachers we had in Elementary School, but few of us remember how many times a 7-year-old has to go to the bathroom. A reminder... it's a lot! Now don't just think of the one 7-year-old, think of the whole school!

I have a 2nd Grade class containing 27 students.

We are part of a Title I PreK-5 school that consists of almost exactly 1000 students! These students all come from low-income families, and many of the comforts in their lives come from our school, not from home.

My Project

Considering that my students rely on our school to provide some of their basic needs, like breakfast and lunch, what would it look like to those students if suddenly they were not allowed to use the restroom at school anymore? Just because budgets are tight and corners are being cut in other parts of their lives shouldn't mean these students have to give up going to the bathroom. Moreover, this isn't something they can just stop doing. Restroom breaks are a basic need to all people, not just students, and if you have to go, you have to go.

Who can learn to their fullest potential if all they can think about it that they have to go to the bathroom?

Without more bathroom tissue in this school, bathroom breaks will become rationed and scarce. I don't want my students to be uncomfortable and unable to think straight because of budget cuts in our district. Please help me keep my students basic needs taken care of, help them keep learning in comfort and hygiene.
