Basic Needs First Leads to the Ability to Learn

My Students

I teach students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). I also have some students in small groups in the general education classroom that are below grade level academically. My IEP students vary from far below grade level to right at grade level. I teach in a school that is urban and students receive free breakfast and lunch.

For many of my students, it is here where they feel the most secure.

The streets of our city are not safe. Being given the gift of new learning materials and experiences brightens their day!

My Project

The students I teach don't always have their basic needs met. They all receive a free breakfast and lunch at school. Snacks however, as well as water, are not provided. My kids frequently ask me for water, or a cup/bottle to fill up at the fountain. They complain that breakfast or lunch wasn't enough to fill them up. I find myself sharing portions of my lunch, giving them extra bottles of water, bringing in snacks from my home and more to try to satisfy this need.

It's a challenge to teach children when they are hungry or thirsty; those basic needs must be met first, in order for them to learn.

My hope is that by being able to consistently provide water and snacks to fuel their bodies and brains, my students will perform better and know that they are loved and cared for. These are not incentives. They truly are just a gift to meet a need for my students. I plan to have the students re-use their water bottles at the fountain a few times before they're recycled. I asked for a variety of snacks, and hope that they will provide students with that extra bit of energy needed to successfully make it through the day.
