Basic Needs Before Growth

My Students

I teach at a magnet school for gifted and high-achieving students. We serve students in grades 6-12 from throughout our district. Students test for admission, and most students are functioning above the 90th percentile. All students are working at least one grade level above their actual age. The students in my school are a true melting pot of nationalities, religions, and economic levels, but the common trait that they have is the love of being challenged and learning new things. My students challenge each other, and me, to learn more and do their very best, both in and out of the classroom!

My Project

As we approach the one year anniversary of our worlds being turned upside down, I am acutely aware that my students have suffered in this year. I am also aware that in order for them to achieve academic growth, I need to provide for their emotional well-being as well. We are not only living through a pandemic, but we have also dealt with several hurricanes that closed our schools this year. These closures resulted in extended school days to make up the lost instructional minutes - which is more hours each day looking at a screen!

With this long school day, many of my students do not have lunch until 1:30 - which is 5 1/2 hours after the start of the school day: having healthy snacks available in my classroom will allow my students the opportunity to focus during this long period before lunch.

The fact that our students who are on campus are confined to static groups means that many of them are not in classes with their closest friends and are also not assigned to the same areas for lunch. This makes the simple act of asking a friend for a tampon a much more complicated ordeal. In an attempt to take one stress off of their plates, I have placed a basket of feminine supplies in each of the girls' bathrooms on campus. Although this only started a few weeks ago, I have had several students thank me for doing it.

Snacks, tampons, and panty liners may not seem like much, but I can assure you that by providing these small things, my students are able to focus on the bigger picture! It makes the year a little less stressful - and that is what they need the most right now!
