This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My brilliant scholars are 100% low income from Washington, D.C., and have tremendous challenges in getting to school, and blocking out the countless stresses in their lives so they can focus on learning. Just yesterday, I shared my lunch with a 14-year old who is living with grandma because his mother died recently, and his father is in prison -- again.
So many do not have the supports at home to make sure they come to school well fed, and with the basic supplies they need to learn.
I scour the discount racks and garage sales for hoodies and polo shirts, as well as notebooks, pens, paper, markers, and other supplies.
I am so glad there are many out there who will give to help those with the greatest need, so I can focus on helping empower my students with the knowledge they need to change their lives and the world.
My Project
I have an empty classroom and students who don't even have pens or notebooks. The educational and inspirational posters will help make the classroom pop, and let my students be surrounded by THEIR history. The pen/pencil holders will allow me to set up a station for borrowing pens (because so many sadly never show up with a pen). I'm just looking for the basics.
These supplies will help me give them the learning experience they need and deserve.
These are amazing kids facing normal challenges to transitioning into adulthood -- with the added stresses of poverty, single parent homes, travelling an hour to get to school. I've learned the hard lesson that that some just won't make it. But your help will ensure that I can focus on great instruction to empower them to change their lives and their communities.
