This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low income area, many of my elementary school students experience art for the first time in my classroom. Our school is not far from the Bushwick studios, so many students see the vivid and colorful murals on their way to school. My energetic students love working with art materials and getting their hands messy! Many of them look forward to their art class once a week and bring lots of ideas and interests with them!

My Project

Sharpies and markers are essential to students as they practice drawing skills and brainstorm ideas for projects that are longer and require more planning. These are tools that are heavily used in the art room and need to be replaced due to wear and tear. Every year the fifth graders do a sculpture unit in which they will use plaster to cover their sculptures and eventually they will use acrylic paint to bring the details of their sculptures to life. Modeling clay is an essential material for kids who often don't get a chance to use the real clay but can use modeling clay as a practice tool. My students will be excited to have their basic art materials replenished!
