Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Jackie Robinson stated, "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives." This couldn't be a more accurate representation of my students at this moment. After reading about the life of Jackie Robinson, my students were inspired to learn to play baseball.

I teach 20 minority students in a high-poverty area.

All of the students in the classroom are of Latino and African American decent. I have students that live in single family homes, small trailers, small rooms, garages, and in foster care. The school district has limited funds even for the basic educational needs of these students. The school has problems providing books, paper, crayons, and pencils on a daily basis. These students are enthusiatic and always ready to take challenges. These kids live in a gang infested, drug infested community with little opportunities for the students to play sports. These students do not have the money to play a team sport. Parents, lack the abiltity to invest on the students. The students stay indoors due to safety reasons thereby denying them to opportunity to exercise. Most are home watching Television and are put on a high risk for many health problems such as diabetis and obesity.

My Project

"He who is not courageous enough to take risk will accomplish nothing in life", Muhammad Ali. These students have learned from history that it takes a dream, such as the one Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had, plus actions to accomplish any goal. They were inspired during the lessons about famous African Americans of the past. They asked me, "Can we learn to play baseball, just like Jackie Robinson?". I told them that it would be wonderful to learn the sport but that it takes money to buy the supplies. This is when I decided to give them an opportunity and grant them that dream to be like Jackie Robinson. Students will be provided baseball gloves, balls, bases, Tees, and with bats, to get started! They will be provided with the opportunity to develop skills to play baseball and learn what it means to be in a team. They will have the opportunity to learn about playing cooperative, communication skills, and taking turns.

The benefits of learning to play a team sport are many, but for these kids it also improves their academic achievement through physical activity.

Physically active children have more energy and better attention span due to the health benifits of the activity. They receive problem solving skills through learning to problem solve and strategize in the game. Finally, playing sports improves their self-worth in a community that constantly fails to provide them with positive images.
