This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our classroom is full of mathematicians! Each day I have the privilege of working with students to help develop their math brains. I facilitate math talks and number sense routines, explain new math games for students to engage in, guide students through problem solving, and so much more.

One of my goals in my math instruction is to use math manipulatives more to help students develop understanding of different math concepts.

When teaching a new math concept, it is important to begin in the concrete (using manipulatives) then connect the concrete to picture representations, and finally then connect it to the abstract procedures. Base ten blocks are an essential tool that math learners use to add, subtract, multiply, divide, represent decimal numbers, and so much more. These foam base ten blocks are quite so students can work and not distract others. I will organize these sets in pencil cases so that students can grab a box from our math shelves whenever they need them. They will also be organized in a way that makes it easy to grab a couple sets to use in math small group lessons.
