Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a small public middle school serving roughly 370 students in our neighborhood of Oakland, CA. We are a small school by design, serving families within the community as well as students from throughout Oakland. The student body is about 87 percent Latino, and 56 percent of our students are English learners. In addition, 96 percent of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and seven percent of our students are identified as needing special education services.
Our school culture is unique because it's very positive, encouraging, and uplifting.
My Project
We have three upcoming field trips that are completely free of cost for our students, however, we have to get to each one - and BART is expensive!
We have trips planned across the Bay, but currently don't have any way to get our students to these amazing experiences!
Field Trip 1: Our Newcomer classes will be attending a field trip at The Crucible in West Oakland. During a 90-minute self-guided and interactive tour, students will see demonstrations by artists and industry experts in twelve different areas, including Glass Flameworking, Glass Blowing, Welding, Blacksmithing, Jewelry, Foundry, Bicycles, Neon, Woodcarving, and Torch Cutting. This experience supports learning in mathematics, science, art, and world cultures. Students witness firsthand how artists and makers are creating the objects that surround us and learn about the processes, tools, materials, and applications of industrial arts.
Field Trip 2:My Newcomer 2 class has been accepted to participate in a Narrative Podcasting Workshop with the famed 826 Valencia in San Francisco. Students will reflect on their background, identity, and passions to craft a personal narrative. During the trip, volunteer tutors support students as they learn about podcasts to write and record their own. 826 Valencia then edits and produces the recordings, which can be shared with the world. This field trip teaches students about poetry, sensory details, presentation skills, and some basics of podcasting and sound editing.
Field Trip 3:Our Girls Outdoor Club will be riding bikes across the Golden Gate Bridge! Our goal is to get girls outdoors and participating in activities. Students will ride along San Francisco's stunning waterfront on Sports Basement bikes across the Golden Gate Bridge. It will be an up-close & personal look at our most famous landmark!
Please help us get BART tickets so we can take students to these amazing experiences!
