My students need basic supplies that we often tear through! They have great Math notebooks but they fill them up. Often they have overcome so much just to get to school, pencils are an afterthought.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Most of my students come from very high poverty and several have had significant difficulties they have had to overcome each day just to get to school! We are building a classroom environment that grows our character. We are learning to grow and learn in a way that lifts each other up (rather than tear each other down).
We talk every single day about overcoming adversity and living our life plan!
My students are learning math and, at the same time, building life skills every day.
My Project
We will use all of these pencils, notebooks, dry erase markers and chart paper almost everyday. Students are filling up their Math notebooks, so we can definitely use replacements. At this point in the year they almost all need a new one. They burn through pencils. They have overcome so much just to get to school, I cannot hold it against them that they do not have one. I'd love to have enough on hand that giving them a new one when they need it is never an issue. They are using chart paper and dry erase markers to teach each other new things they learn.
The students get so much more from a lesson when they have learned the material and then are confident enough to teach each other what they know!
