My Students

In our after school choir, students have a blast engaged in community music-making.

Hola, and welcome to my proposal to support the music education and enjoyment of eager, energetic, and enthusiastic 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade choir students who represent six different languages.

These children attend a high poverty school in a district that cut all elementary physical education, music, and computer teachers from the budget, in a state that is #1 in prison spending and #49 in education spending.

My Project

In our choir program, we integrate social studies with the performing arts through music, movement, and songs. Students and their families feel the same joy of community as did new immigrants, settlers, pioneers, and sailors of yore when our program culminates with an old fashioned barn dance for which the audience spends more time on its feet than in its seats. Students would enjoy playing a banjolele because, like a uke, it can be tuned to a single chord so that even the most rhythmically-challenged student can play with pride. The book, From Wibbleton to Wobbleton, adds more singing games to our repertoire, and the Hoberman sphere gives them a visual aid for breath control.

Thank you for reading this proposal for these music supplies that will outlast any iPad (for which there are currently over 4000 proposals including one for my class).

When the electricity goes out, wi-fi goes down, viruses attack, or hackers get in, we'll still be able to make lively, happy music with our instruments. And we welcome you to join us.
