My students AMAZE me! We are a small district sixth grade offers the first opportunity for my students to attend art as an elective. They absolutely amaze me! I average about 50 sixth graders per semester, and although they have no formal training in art, the talent is absolutely unbelievable!
Upon moving to this district, I often joked with friends and family saying, "There must be something in the water because these kids are so naturally talented!" Well, water we have!
We were a district hard hit by Hurricane Harvey, but it hasn't stopped us from being winners in every way. In the classroom, we practice inclusion with a large variety of special needs children. My 7th-8th grade students work hard in semester one to score at Houston Livestock Show art contest and with excellent results--receiving Gold Medal and Best of Show on a couple of occasions. They have used their limited resources to grow--and to show, and to share art and kindness throughout the area. As I told my principal last week, "I love my students."
My Project
I would like to implement ball chairs to replace classroom furniture after Hurricane Harvey. Why do I think they would be successful? While working on my masters, I interviewed an administrator from the Houston-area who raved about the success of these chairs in some of her classrooms. These giant balls allow students to gain a little exercise and help settle students into their activity.
Fidgety students enter the art room with much excitement, and having ball chairs available will let them work their wiggles out while increasing concentration and success!
Not only having the ability to get exercise through tiny-quiet little bounces, they will settle in and be ready for the next class too. Trying ball chairs will be a great way to replace some furniture after Hurricane Harvey.
