"Sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms and child care centers, it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." -Tom Hunter from National Association for the Education of Young Children.
I have a fantastic group of 1st graders.
Each one is so uniquely individual in a class that's culturally diverse. They are a lively, bright group of children. A majority of them are second language learners. Although challenged with a language barrier, my students come every day eager and ready to learn. We are a community school located in Los Angeles, CA with strong family commitment. My students have many benefits that students in other areas do not. A supportive PTA/Youth Association supplies teachers/students with a wide range of basic materials however, the economy has hit our families hard, and they are now more limited with how much they can help us.
My Project
With the addition of 28 balance balls and bases or "balance seats", each student will have the ability to choose their seat preference. For my students that have trouble sitting and staying in one spot throughout the day (restless student syndrome), these balls will prove to be highly beneficial. It will allow them to move while seated and reduce fidgeting behavior while enhancing their focus in the classroom. The balance balls are not only important for these students but for the engagement of all others as well.
Studies show that students who use balance balls in place of traditional seating have an increase in on-task behavior, as well as improved self-esteem.
By permitting my students to make small movements or wiggle around on a balance ball during class, it will assist in keeping the students engaged; allowing them to better retain new information along with gaining core strength and good posture.
