Thank you for helping to fund our project for digital arts and storytelling, which has inspired our classroom's creativity in so many ways. When we received the iPad last spring (May 2025), one of the first projects we began working on was stop motion animation videos using pattern blocks. Students learned so much about patience and teamwork while working on the animation process. \r\n\r\nNow that we are in the thick of Halloween season, we have been using the iPad to explore the spooky side of creativity! Our main project has been making digital recreations of Edvard Munch's \"The Scream,\" with students posing in place of the \"screamer,\" which has yielded some hilarious results. These recreations will be used as the basis for a writing prompt, \"What are some things that make you scream?\"\r\n\r\nOur class is excited to explore other possibilities with the iPad later on in the school year, including Book Creator to author our own digital stories, as well as performing readers theater, reciting poems, and making dance videos against a green screen backdrop. This project has revolutionized our classroom! I used to fret over the Proverbial Pencil Problem - many students' pencils would be missing, damaged, or completely snapped in two, every day. It's been nearly two months, and only three students have lost their pencils. As for the number of damaged pencils, that number has gone down to zero! The children truly care about their fancy pencils and are more attentive and careful with keeping them safe and in good condition.\r\n\r\nWe periodically measure our pencils as part of our supply management, and it's been such an engaging way to review our measurement skills with rulers. We are also thrilled to use our cute, new purple pencil sharpener, which is quick, efficient, and minimizes class disruptions. The students also have been delighted with the erasers and pencil toppers, and love the pencil grips, which have made writing so much more comfortable, especially for those with fine motor challenges and additional support with handwriting skills. \r\n\r\nThank you for giving to our project and being our generous \"pencil pal\" supporter! The Spot the Feelings box set quickly became a favorite, as we are learning about feelings and emotions. They also enjoyed listening to the inspiring stories of diverse icons such as Selena and Ritchie Valens. These stories truly resonated with them as they discovered the beauty of different languages, cultures, and traditions.\r\n\r\nAnother highlight was exploring books about different professions. You should have seen their faces brighten when I explained what was inside the packages I had put together - the origami books you had donated for us, as well as the colorful variety of origami paper (each child got a \"starter pack\" of 10-12 sheets). I also included a postcard and a fun multi-colored ballpoint pen that were not part of this project, but which students could use to write a note to me over the summer if they wished. The students didn't waste time diving into their origami books. We haven't quite finished the school year yet (still got a few days remaining), so some of the children have been spending a bit of time in class practicing their origami skills while using the books as a reference. \r\n\r\nAll this to say, THANK YOU so much for making this spot of joy happen in our classroom. Thank you so much for providing the amazingly fun KEVA planks, straw constructor set, and Magna-Tiles for our classroom. For months, they have been the top favorite materials for my students to work with after they have completed their regular assignments. \r\n\r\nWhen we first received these tools, I started bringing them out gradually, beginning with the Magna-Tiles. I would give the students challenge prompts to focus their creative/constructive time, asking them to build a vehicle that could fly, for example. Now I connect our STEM challenges with read alouds I've shared during language arts time, and allow the students to choose which of the three tools they would like to use to complete that challenge. Just last week, the students heard a read aloud about social insects (e.g., honeybees, paper wasps, ants), and I asked them to create a shelter for one of these creatures that addressed the science knowledge we had learned with questions such as these: \"Where does the queen live?\" \"Where is the entrance that's guarded by the soldier ants?\" \"Can you tell me where I would find the larvae?\" It was fantastic to see how the students could show me what they knew based on the structures they built, incorporating the new vocabulary and concepts I'd taught.\r\n\r\nIt will be exciting to see what other explorations we'll be able to engage in as we continue using these tools. It's been several months since our class began using the new green screen and tripod from this project, and the setup has made our creative process so much easier. We went from a collapsible green screen that allowed for only two people to be filmed at a time in a very confined space, to a much wider space that allows more flexibility and possibilities in filming and storytelling with larger groups of actors. We also went from using a flimsy music stand to prop up my camera, to using the much studier and more stable tripod to film subjects from different angles. It's great!!\r\n\r\nThis year, we have worked on video projects inspired by the British animated film, \"The Snowman,\" as well as a variety small photography projects that incorporate holidays and historical events, such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s \"I have a dream\" speech. More recently, we finished up a green screen project to go along with St. Patrick's Day, as students imagined what they would do if they found a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. They wrote fanciful narratives in response to this prompt, then took green screen photos to accompany their written pieces. Their families were tickled with the end result!\r\n\r\nThank you so much for your kindness and support. It's not often that I can say I learned and discovered something genuinely new alongside my students, but this time, with these amazing Skybasic microscopes, I can honestly say that I did! \r\n\r\nThis week, my class had the opportunity to try out these digital microscopes for the first time. We were first given an introduction on how microscopes work, as well as their proper use, by a UCLA scientist and parent volunteer. We then looked at variety of samples, including rocks, feathers, fabric, hair, sand, pond scum, and compost. Because the microscopes could magnify everything between 50-1000x their actual size, we were able to see fine details and microscopic creatures we would have never otherwise noticed. Of particular note were the tiny mites that scurried around the samples of compost.\r\n\r\nThe digital microscopes came with a useful app that we were able to download onto our iPads, allowing us to not only view, but take photos and videos of what we saw as well. Afterwards, students jotted down their observations and sketches, describing in detail what they saw. What a powerful way to get my students writing and drawing! We will be revisiting our notes and observations in the coming weeks, and I'll be setting up a station for students to use the microscopes. Our UCLA scientist parent will also return for a few more sessions to talk to us about erosion and how sand is formed, using the microscopes as a way to illustrate the process.\r\n\r\nThank you for your support and generosity in making this learning experience in science happen. The red journals, epecially, have been a crucial part of our journey in 2nd grade, since we use them almost daily for jotting down ideas and crafting narratives for weekly journal assignments. Having each of their pieces stored in one journal helps me track their development in grammar skills, spelling, and written expression. My students enjoy sharing their work by reading their stories out loud from their journals, giving them opportunities to be in the spotlight. And because my students frequently take their journals home, their parents can see what we've been learning and writing about, making the journals a great home-to-school connection.\r\n\r\nSince we received the colored multipurpose paper at the start of the school year, I've been using it to make copies of a variety of worksheets and parent communications. I often color-code the types of copies so that students can quickly identify and locate different papers they store in their folders and on their desks. A few of my students have asked to take a copy outside with them to recess or lunch break, which brings me a lot of joy.\r\n\r\nHaving these books has been a beautiful way to connect with my students as well. Being new to the Dragon Masters series myself, I have taken on the challenge of reading all the books myself before making each one available to the class, and sometimes I will write a personal note to a student, saying, \"I just finished reading Book 3 of Dragon Masters, and I thought you might enjoy this.\" This has helped to create more buy-in to reading, especially letting students see me as a reader, too.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping my students grow their love of reading!
