Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Children can learn endless skills that correlate to math and science by cooking in the kitchen. It is a perfect course of action in which each student develops attention to detail, hand-eye coordination, creativity, perspective, exploration, textures, and gross and fine motor skills, as well as measuring and learning about mixtures and solutions.

I will always remember my baking experience.

This project may be a bit ambitious, but I have seen that students make better connections with things they can apply to real life situations and activities. With this project, I want my students to have the opportunity to make cookies from scratch. They will learn to read a recipe, identify the ingredients they need, and increase or decrease quantities if necessary. They will also learn to collaborate in a group, divide responsibilities, start the recipe with the correct measurements, and follow the procedure. The desired outcome will be that students will be able to use appropriate measuring tools and convert pounds to ounces. This will be great since it goes along with matter and mixtures in science.

I am sure that in addition to enjoying themselves, they will learn in a more visual and hands-on way in the areas of math and science. They will learn about fractions, measurements, liquids, solids, solutions, homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures, among others. My students will divide into four groups to collaborate and complete the cooking challenge in an allotted time frame. With your help my class and the ones to come will have this wonderful experience that they will not forget.
