I teach first grade in the heart of the South Bronx. Families in this community have few resources. Many students do not have books at home. This is why I send students home every night with a plastic baggie of about seven books to read with their families and by themselves. Students tote the baggies back and forth from home to school every day. I tell my students that they must practice reading at home as well as at school in order to improve. Unfortunately, plastic baggies easily fall apart. This upsets students and interrupts the flow of reading time whenever I need to replace a broken baggie. Next year... I want sturdy canvas book bags! Students can decorate these bags with permanent fabric paint. Students will be so proud to hold on to a self-designed book baggie. They will be inspired by the baggies to read more, to cherish the books inside, and to live like readers always carrying around a bag filled with books. I also need index card boxes. These will become home to students' sight word flash cards. The boxes will live inside the baggies as well so students can practice learning new words at home with their families and also at school. My students need these resources to help them learn every day. They need the baggies in particular to increase their interest in reading and give them something to be proud of.
