My Students

My 9th grade students are Amazing!!! They are faced with many challenges each day. My students come into my classroom willing to learn and experience learning through hands on activities.

In our Foods 1 curriculum we discuss bacteria and why Food Borne Illness is a problem.

One of the Standards is differentiating between what each of the Food Borne Illnesses are. I have my students swab the lab with certified swabs and petri dishes so that they can see what types of microorganisms are growing in our lab.

My Project

By allowing my students the opportunity to swab our Kitchen, it will give them some insight as to how bacteria grows and where. Too often, students think that their cellphones, shoes and backpacks don't have any bacteria on them because they can't see them. With these supplies, students will be able to think and see beyond what their eyes and brains comprehend. If we allow kids to see that bacteria resides in places that we use and are around everyday, hopefully it will give them a sense that they need to be a better consumer and employee in the restaurant industry and in their own homes.
