My students are a dynamic group of little humans that are part of a pre-K through grade 8 school community in a primarily low income school district. Many of these 7 and 8 year olds have experienced challenges well beyond their years.
Despite these hurdles, they enthusiastically arrive at school each day ready to learn and explore.
So much of what we do goes beyond academics. I strive to create a safe and comfortable environment where my students can be their best selves. We do a lot of work around social-emotional growth and development. My goal is to develop the whole child and to send them off smarter, stronger, kinder and more prepared than when they came to me.
My grade two students need cubbies in which to store their personal belongings during the day. Currently, my second graders are being asked to keep their personal items (backpacks, coats, etc) on the back of their chairs in the classroom. This not only creates a distraction to the students' learning, but also leads to safety concerns as space is limited in my already crowded classroom.
Individual cubbies will foster a sense of responsibility and independence, allow students to feel confident that their items are safe and organized, and promote smooth transitions and a successful learning environment.
Many of my students do not have the resources available to have spaces of their own at home. Giving these kiddos a space in school to call their own, will encourage a sense of value and purpose, leading to a happy and successful school year.
