My grade two students need cubbies in which to store their personal belongings during the day. Currently, my second graders are being asked to keep their personal items (backpacks, coats, etc) on the back of their chairs in the classroom. This not only creates a distraction to the students' learning, but also leads to safety concerns as space is limited in my already crowded classroom. Individual cubbies will foster a sense of responsibility and independence, allow students to feel confident that their items are safe and organized, and promote smooth transitions and a successful learning environment. Many of my students do not have the resources available to have spaces of their own at home. Giving these kiddos a space in school to call their own, will encourage a sense of value and purpose, leading to a happy and successful school year.
