Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my classroom are a diverse group of high-schoolers. They come from various racial and socio-economic backgrounds. They are all good kids who come to school each and every day for new opportunities to learn and improve. Despite their enthusiasm, our high school still lacks the tools and supplies necessary to educate them equally. Our high school is a 9-12th grade school with over 600 students. Even though there are about some computers for students, it is clearly not enough. The computers must be shared by all the teachers and many lessons lack the opportunity to delve into American History or individuals because the computers were signed out by another teacher that day. Due to these restraints, many of our students are actually lacking 21st century technology skills that would be expected of students. Many struggle with word processors, Internet research, and critical thinking using technology.
My Project
The uses of Chromebooks in my classroom are unlimited. My ultimate goal is to have one computer per student to have a paper-less classroom where students use Google Drive and the resources on the internet to learn writing, analytical and research skills to expand their knowledge of American History. I was fortunate to receive prior Chromebooks donated to my classroom. However, I would like to continue growing my collection to reach my goal of 1:1. Then, they can all equally utilize Google Drive, my classroom website, Google Classroom, and other online resources to create presentations, projects, and other creations. When students each have their own Chromebooks, they can individualize their learning in American History. Students can take a unit like World War II and study specific topics that interest them like the Holocaust, causes of WWII, propaganda, and Pearl Harbor.
These Chromebooks in the classroom will allow students to not only see History come alive before their eyes, but also have them actively engage with History content and skills using technology of today.
Students will become more motivated and excited about History and school if they see the resources provided for them. They will also not feel excluded because they have to share computers. Their learning will be individualized and they will feel included and excited about their education.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
