Back to the Basics

My students need basic supplies, including glue sticks, crayons, markers and tissues, that we are running out of as we get deeper into the year.

My Students

Think back to your earliest school memories. I bet you remember making construction paper turkey hands and cotton ball snowmen. My students deserve to have these same fond memories of their elementary school days. Yet, they are lacking the basic supplies to make that a reality.

As first graders, my students are eager and excited to learn.

They come to school each day with a curiosity for knowledge, individualized to each and every student. They enjoy using their imaginations and exploring their creativity. They each have amazing personalities that both surprise and blow me away each day. They have endless potential, and they are so full of promise. My students attend a public K-5 elementary school in an urban school district of Maryland. Over the last year, they have encountered countless struggles outside of school - the proportion of students receiving free/reduced price lunch is 99% - but they have persevered and they recognize that their education is their best hope for improving their future circumstances. They come to class each day focused and ready to be the best students they can be.

My Project

These resources will change my students' lives for the better in multiple ways. For one, basic necessities such as dry erase markers will enable my students to learn essential first grade skills, such as mastering their letters and becoming independent writers. Secondly, crayons and glue will enable them to fuel their creativity and apply what they are learning to projects that will instill key literary concepts and ideas in their brains. Finally, tissues will be crucial in allowing my students to feel comfortable in the classroom enabling them to excel in all that they do. Quite simply, my students must receive these resources to be successful for the rest of the school year. If my students can master their foundational skills this year, they will have a better opportunity to be successful throughout elementary school and throughout their academic careers. Given the depressed economic state of their community, it is a moral imperative that my students be given the opportunity to do so.

Please allow my students to show what they are capable of.

Help them to feel the success that they deserve. Making a donation to this project will ensure that twenty-five 1st graders are living up to their full potential. These supplies will not only change their daily lives, but it may also help to instill a passion for learning that they will carry throughout their academic careers. Please help to ensure that these children are given the opportunity to feel success each and every day.
