I teach at a Title I/STAR school where the majority of our students receive Free and Reduced-Priced Meals. We also have a growing Blessing in a Backpack Program, where students get to fill their backpacks with food for the weekend. Most of our students live in the downtown area of our town. Our students come from diverse backgrounds including different countries and cultures.
Despite the fact that they face many hardships outside of the classroom, our students come to school every day to feel safe, supported, loved, and ready learn.
Every day they strive to become better readers, mathematicians, writers, scientists, researchers, problem solvers, friends, leaders, and critical thinkers. They learn and practice skills that will ensure their successful futures.
These students are the future of our community and the world. I want to give them the best tools that will allow them to reach their goals, and help brighten each of their futures.
My Project
As a Title I school teacher, basic classroom things such as glue, paper, pencils, etc. are not brought in by our students. Our students usually come with little or no supplies - supplies that are essential to everyday classroom activities!
I love being able to make activities more engaging, simply adding color brightens our classroom.
My students always love getting to be creative with materials they don't have at home, like colored paper, glue, and markers. Dry erase markers make a huge difference for my students working though a difficult math problem or organizing their writing on a surface that can easily change.
Meeting basic needs may sound elementary (no pun intended); but research and countless educational theories show that these low level needs must be met first before effective learning can occur.
