Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All of my students are first or second generation immigrants and live in our school's neighborhood. The majority of my students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch and may become the first in their family to attend college. My students have great opportunities in my class and at our school, but they deserve more.
Our SF Bay Area school has a dedicated and active focus on biliteracy as our developmental dual-language program is the largest in our school district.
This year in my class, we are also focusing on integrating technology and building a great love of reading into all content areas of our literacy practices.
Because our school is a Title I school, funding is a continued challenge in our community. Our students depend on teachers' out of pocket purchases and donations to access materials beyond the requirements. The generous support of the DonorsChoose.org community makes many learning opportunities for my students possible. Please help support my amazing group of fifth graders!
My Project
Most years, my students receive random assortments of school supplies that end up lost, unused, or in the trash. Without clear expectations for their supplies, they are most often just extra things to take care of.
My 5th-grade students deserve high quality, systematic materials that support their growth in responsibility and organization.
They will all have a writable binder to organize and add to plus utilize their class notes, literacy materials, and essential class papers. They will use the 2-pocket folder to share important school and class information with their parents as well as house their daily homework practice, take homework, and also so important, maintain their Pathway to Biliteracy Reading Log. My students will use the electronic cleaner to maintain their class Chromebooks to keep them free from dust and fingerprints. The card stock paper and labels will be used for projects, grading, and labeling materials. Lastly, my students will benefit from organized leveled readers for our small group targeted reading skills and strategies work. The binder clips will be used to keep the languages, titles, and levels of the group readers separate.
By implementing structures for a school year of clear organizational practices for school and home, my students will be better prepared to enter middle school with the independence and confidence to succeed in six different classes. Rather than searching for homework, classwork notes, or practice for a specific lesson or subject, they will have the support of a common structure for organizing and maintaining their thinking and practice. In addition, their parents will have an increased understanding of and involvement in their child´s day to day practice and will be better equipped to support their child.
