Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My high school is located in a very tight-knit community and most have grown up alongside their peers. Due to that, I have a rambunctious array of students who not only challenge themselves daily, but also push their peers to also succeed. The only thing that I must point out is that I do have a variety of students. While some are very wealthy, the majority really struggle to make ends meet. Having the right school supplies truly is a struggle for some.
I want my students to have a classroom that they can take pride in.
They see the flaws in the room; they point out the shortcomings around campus. They are constantly comparing our high school to those schools that are wealthier.
I don't want them to feel like this. I want them to feel like they are receiving the high quality education that they deserve. My students work hard and dream big. Help them see their potential--not just their obstacles.
My Project
With this project, I am asking for basic writing supplies which will help with reading and analysis. This year, I will be teaching AP Lit and Freshmen English. For my senior course, I will be asking students to really dissect their text and read it closely. To do so, I need supplies. Since I can't require them to buy their books, I am asking for the post-its. This will allow them to still interact with the text without those hefty bookroom fees. For my freshmen English, it's all about foundational skills, which also requires a lot of supplies. I use a lot of highlighters with my freshmen, especially for things like breaking down prompts and highlighting key ideas. On the list, I have index cards, pencils, highlighters, and post-it notes.
Most of my students are not financially able to buy classroom materials; but that shouldn't stop them from still experiencing hands-on and interactive activities.
On the list, you will also find a classroom timer and tampons. As a new teacher, I still really struggle with pacing. I am hoping to use that timer to really set parameters for our activities. Also, I am hoping to use it for in-class writing activities and formal speeches. In regards to the tampons, I keep a pink box in my room which is full of feminine hygiene products. My female students (current and former) frequently use this box. I currently have pads within the box, but students have mentioned that they prefer tampons. I am asking for help to refill my box.
