Back to School Essentials: Meeting Student Needs in a Pandemic
Help me give my students supplies needed when we transition back to in person schooling: touch-less dispensers (with batteries) and liquid hand sanitizer, chair bands and a voice amplifier for speaking through a mask.
My students represent many ethnicities, races, genders and social classes and come from all over the city to our school in the heart of Buffalo, NY. This school year I am teaching seventh-grade science, biology (Living Environment), as well as anatomy and physiology. My students come with a diverse set of abilities, interests, experiences, and backgrounds, but most come ready to learn every day. By providing support and materials in my classroom, I help eliminate barriers to learning and allow students of all abilities to flourish and grow. Our classroom approach takes into account the academic and mental health needs of students to help support students where they are and move them forward.
My students show passion for learning; they actively engage in whole and small group instruction, independent work, activities, and projects.
Most come motivated every single day to learn and do their best. By providing STEM-based activities, students get hands-on experience and learn about making connections within science content and other STEM fields. The supplies and materials so generously donated through DonorsChoose help bring those activities to life and inspire my students in ways that would otherwise not be possible.
My Project
Still in the midst of a pandemic, I am trying to best anticipate my students' needs as we will eventually transition back to in-person schooling. There are so many things that will simply not be the same and I am trying to do what I can to support my students as well as keep us all safe. I am requesting touch-less dispensers (with batteries) and liquid hand sanitizer, chair bands and a voice amplifier for speaking through a mask.
Students will be limited in movement in school and this lack of physical exercise (even from changing classes) can potentially have a detrimental effect; the chair bands are a way to allow students to wiggle and move while sitting in a way that does not increase risk for germ spread.
Knowing I will teach through a mask, the voice amplifier will allow my students to hear me without difficultly while not straining my voice.
The touch-less hand sanitizer dispensers will allow students to get hand sanitizer in a germ-free way. The batteries and liquid hand sanitizer are both needed for the dispensers. Having a touch-less system is so important to help eliminate the touching of common surfaces.
While the return to in person schooling is fraught with complications and issues, the materials in the project address some of our most basic needs as education changes and adapts.
