This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach science at a Title I school in Nevada. I teach grades 6, 7, and 8. People usually hear this and ask me why I have decided to willingly subject myself to the wrath of 13-14 year olds. I always laugh at this because middle school kids are just like another. They want to be understood, respected, and cared for.

My students are amazing young men and women, who love learning.

My students are incredibly hardworking, they are curious, loving, and above all else, they are hilarious! I know I am bias, but I love my middle school kiddos. I am not sure why we click so well, but I think it has to do with our ability to fluently speak and understand sarcasm.

We have a lot of fun in my class, but we also work very hard. Some of our academics have been made more difficult by a lack of classroom supplies. I need help. I want my students to be able to come to class and not worry about what supplies they need. I want to be able to provide all of that for them so they are free to focus on their learning and grow.

My Project

Most of the supplies in this project are needed to help stop the spread of germs and keep students and staff safe and healthy, while going back to school during the pandemic. I am lucky to teach science and have a science classroom; one of the only rooms with multiple sinks.

My entire team will be utilizing the sinks in my room to allow students to wash their hands and sanitize; the soap, paper towels, paper towel holders, and hand sanitizer will be invaluable.

I am also requesting white boards for my students. I will not be able to collect paper work from them and this will allow them to write out answer/questions and hold them up. This will allow me to see what they are thinking/check their understanding and will allow students to engage.

Charging cables and blocks are needed to set up a charging session. Students will be using personal electronic devices to submit assignments and download resources. I would love to provide a charging station for them to use throughout the day.

Finally, a scent diffuser, this may seem silly, but I know that small differences can make or break a classroom. With all of the panic and confusion going into this school year, I want my classroom to be a safe and comfortable place for my students. I plan on adding essential oils to the diffuser that will promote a calm environment.

The school year has just started for teaching in Washoe County and it is already stressful. These supplies will help to alleviate stress on my part, but for all students on my team. I want my students to be able to come to school and focus on their learning and these supplies will greatly help.
