I teach 7th and 8th grade students in small town New Mexico. While my students are culturally diverse, coming from mainly Caucasian, Hispanic, and Native American, plus some Asian and African American backgrounds, many are economically disadvantaged. They are at that age where they are trying so hard to act all grown up, but they are still kids at heart. I get joy from seeing my students grow and change each day while still getting to be kids while they are at school.
My students gleefully participate in art hands-on art activities and projects where they can explore new and different mediums.
Most of them have never seen art in museums, so their exposure in class is the only experience they have with artists from the past and present. We use a survey approach to learn about art history and the elements of art and design. Then students create projects that reflect what we have studied in class. My goal is that my students leave my class with a general appreciation for art, a beginning knowledge of what they like and the ability to express that knowledge, and an idea of the medium(s) they would like to explore in future.
My Project
My students are enjoying creating art with a variety of mediums. They are learning about color theory, how colors blend, and how to create texture in their drawings. While they are drawing or coloring, they learn technique.
Colored pencils, markers, and cardstock are the essentials we use in class every day for sketchbook work and projects.
While my students are doing a great job taking care of supplies; colored pencils get sharpened down, markers dry out, and cardstock gets used up. Helping with this project will give my students the essential supplies they need to continue exploring art and creativity.
