We are a small, rural school located in a town that borders an American Indian Reservation. With the small town and reservation there is a strong sense of family and community in our school as many students are related to one another as siblings, cousins, etc. This translates through to the high school, which is connected to our K-6 building and houses roughly 260 students grades 7-12.
These relationships are apparent in our sports teams and the way our students participate in extra-curricular activities.
The school spirit and camaraderie of a small-town school is unique in that every player is vital.
My Project
Many of our student-athletes participate on waived sports fees in our district, but many are cut short by lack of personal proper equipment. This is especially true when it comes to proper footwear which is vital in Track and Field.
As the Junior Varsity girls Track and Field coach, watching a sprinter put on a pair of spikes and realize the difference it will make in their performance is magical.
I have many young student-athletes who come out for the sport with the only pair of tennis shoes they have in their closet. Not only does it affect their performance, but it can also be a safety issue if the shoes are too worn or have an improper fit. Creating a supply of proper footwear will ensure that these athletes can both perform well and safely.
Track and Field is unique in sports competition by allowing students to compete both individually in their events and together as a team. I've so often witnessed students pick up an additional event at a moment's notice during a meet in order to help the team gain more points. This speaks volumes to our character and sportsmanship. Having these running spikes readily available will encourage my athletes to try new events they otherwise wouldn't have, increase our team spirit, and provide a supply of safe footwear that will help our student-athletes perform at their very best.
