Help me give my students the materials they need to care for their children. A large percentage of our students are parents (male and female). Diapers, wipes, clothing, and cleaning products are needed.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Home is now school! Many of my students "home" life is unstable and unpredictable even in this time of COVID-19! Some homes are small, crowded, and lack a quiet place to learn. Some homes are group homes or foster care which means more time in a place that is not truly your own. Other homes are full of attention and challenges that could typically be avoided when coming to school. This kind of trauma makes it hard to focus, stay organized and do any kind of work most importantly school work!
As a staff, we are online daily (sometimes into the evening) providing support and assisting with connecting to the limited resources available to them.
While some have devices and technology, many were unable to make it to the school to pick up a device due to circumstances beyond their control. The lack of transportation and other resources also makes getting to a meal-based facility difficult, which leads to the lack of quality nourishment and increasing frustration.
Additionally, our students NEED connection and community. We find ourselves supporting their social emotional needs more than academic, as they are finding it hard to learn from home and properly function.
My Project
The recent events have left our teen parents needing our support more than ever! Our student parents have enough to worry about (school, their health, working) without having to wonder if they will have enough diapers and wipes for their children. Our project is geared toward relieving that burden from the shoulders of our student parents. They care about their children and want them to be happy and comfortable. With diapers, wipes, and cleaning supplies, they can feel good about going to school knowing their baby has the necessary supplies. With many of our parents unable to work to cover basic expenses, they get worried and concerned quickly which sometimes takes their mind off school. They are disconnected even more from us which doesn't solve the problem. Our project is part of one solution - provide diapers and wipes to ensure babies are dry and clean, so teen parents can focus on completing school work and graduating!
