I teach fifth grade at a neighborhood elementary school. We are a small school of about 500 students total, Transitional Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Most of our students start with us in Kindergarten and continue through Fifth Grade.
One of the things I love best about our students and families is their true sense of community and collaboration.
We consistently participate in many varied service projects, from donating socks, coats, hats and hygiene kits to homeless shelters to collecting and delivering donations of food, blankets and toys to our local animal shelter. Our school and students are an integral part of our community.
Baba the Storyteller is an award-winning, internationally renowned speaker and performer. He is one of the few recognized U.S. born practitioners of the ancient West African storytelling craft known as Jaliyaa. Through his intimate workshops, students will learn to see themselves, and those around them, as integral players in helping to build and sustain their campus/classroom community. Each student will gain a greater awareness of self, define positive traits of character and engage in introspection through challenging and age-appropriate tasks.
Through facilitated discussions, music sharing and Interactive-Tales students are led through a series of creative workshops to enhance the skills of listening, self-observation and self-monitoring.
Students are challenged as they learn the arduous task of developing positive traits of character, inner-awareness and the importance of being able to articulate one’s wants/needs.
