This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
If you enter our classroom mid-morning, you'll most likely find groups of four students huddled around games or reading with teachers. These are centers where students are practicing skills right at their individual levels so that by the end of the year they'll be strong readers and writers.
Our children are brave, funny, diverse, kind, responsible - so many things!
They are four to five years old. Almost all receive free or reduced lunch. At least five every year speak another language at home (Spanish, French, Wolof). They attend a public charter school in Harlem, and it is a stand-alone school (i.e. not part of a well-funded network of other charter schools).
My Project
Our kids have to be independent workers and sharers during center time because the teachers are working with small groups. So it's critical to give them learning games that are fun and engaging while also being educational! Lakeshore Learning games tend to be just that and they are also color-coded with picture clues and easy words to help kids manage all the materials.
These games will help kids practice the very skills that lead to success in reading and writing.
These four games will help our children practice beginning-of-year skills like beginning sounds, rhyming, ending sounds, and letter sounds.
