My classroom is full of wonderful fifth graders who are eager to learn and are full of potential. We are a Title I School with 70% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.
My goal as their teacher, role model, and support system is to help them pave the way to their successful futures.
My students are ready for and deserving of a successful year! Not only am I able to teach them and watch them learn and grow daily, but they are teaching me every day they walk into the classroom. My goal is to build a community within our classroom that provides a positive learning environment where the students feel safe, comfortable and excited to learn!
My Project
In the past, when students walked into a classroom, they really only had two options on where to sit: a chair or the floor. They were expected to sit on one of these hard surfaces for a large portion of the day and be engaged. It is no surprise that the majority of fifth graders can not do this.
There are so many different alternative seating options.
The one that I am the most interested in is colored foam ottomans that can be pieced together to create benches, story circles, flowers and many more designs. I feel like these options are the perfect size for 5th graders and would be the least disruptive and the most inviting to our classroom. My philosophy is: the more comfortable students are in the classroom, the better chance the instruction will be absorbed and applied.
I have many students who love to sit at the carpet during lessons and many who find it very uncomfortable. They are a great resource because they can easily be move around the classroom and are small enough to fit on the edge of our classroom instructional carpet.
We have been using the ottomans as an alternative to the carpet and they are working wonderfully. They are the perfect size for one student at a time. It would be great to provide my students with additional ottomans so more than four students can sit on them during instruction. It is my goal to get as many flexible seating opinions as possible so students can work comfortably, quietly and effectively!
